Former Westview coach Edwards-Powell wins

Joan Edwards-Powell, a Portland resident and former boys golf coach at Westview High School, won the Senior Division at the 21st Oregon Women's Stroke Play Championship at Emerald Valley Golf Course in Creswell on Sunday.

Edwards-Powell, a Pacific Northwest Hall of Famer, shot 76-75-152 to defend her title and grab a fifth victory in this championship.

Beaverton Blaze takes third at ASA 14UA nationals

The Beaverton Blaze has earned its place among the nation's best. The Blaze, coached by Chris Kelly, won six of eight games and took third place in the 98-team ASA 14UA Western Nationals, held Aug. 4 through Sunday in Sacramento, Calif.

The Blaze beat, in order, Sudden Impact 2-1, the Boombahs 12-0, the Punishers 1-0, the SoCal Jynx 12-3, the Rage 1-0 and the Magic 7-1 before finally coming up short against AASA 7-2 in its semifinal, and against Power Surge 12-11 in 11 innings.

Former Sunset star Lucas coming back to Metro League

Landen Lucas, who played his freshman and sophomore basketball seasons at Sunset, recently announced that he is transferring from Findlay Prep in Las Vegas, Nev., to Westview for his senior season.

Lucas, a 6-foot-8 post who is ranked the 16th-best center in ESPN's Class of 2012 rankings, played for the USA West team in last weekend's Nike Global Challenge at Liberty High School.
