Two major events are on deck for the Portland area baseball community.
The annual Active and Oldtimers Baseball Association's annual banquet will be held Saturday night at the Multnomah Athletic Club. And the Northwest Baseball Coaches Convention, with its accompanying College Baseball Fair for high school players, is set for Jan. 16-18.
Main speakers for the Active and Oldtimers banquet will be Tom Trebelhorn, Baltimore Orioles third base coach; Tommy Sandt, new hitting coach for the Portland Beavers; and Tom Gorman, who pitched in the majors from 1981 to 1987.
The banquet helps raise money for scholarships to high school players headed for Oregon colleges. On Saturday, the association will present $2,000 scholarships to Kevin Gunderson of Central Catholic and Jonah Nickerson of Oregon City, both bound for Oregon State.
The social hour starts at 6 p.m., with dinner at 7. Tickets are $35 and are available at the door or by calling 503-297-3120.
The Northwest Baseball Coaches Convention is scheduled for the Holiday Inn, 24525 S.W. 95th Ave., in Wilsonville. Featured presenters include Marty Lehn, coach of the Canadian national team, and Dave Brundage, Baseball America's 2003 minor league manager of the year for his work with the San Antonio Missions.
