Cody Jackson earns Greco Roman national title
Youngster enters Scappoose High School this fall
The smallest and youngest of the three Scappoose wrestlers that went to the national wrestling tournament in Fargo, North Dakota came up the biggest.
Cody Jackson, 15, won the national title in Greco Roman wrestling in the 84-pound class of the Cadet Division.
Jackson beat wrestlers from Colorado, Virginia, Florida, and New York to reach the finals. In the finals, he topped Jabari Moody of Illinois. Moody won the freestyle tournament.
Jackson will be a freshman this fall at Scappoose High. He should have a good shot at making the varsity wrestling team, perhaps just needing to gain a little weight for the 103-pound class.
Also wrestling in the tournament were Chris Wagner and Ryan Bond. Wagner wrestled in the 119 pound class. He was injured two days before the tournament, and exited quickly from the Greco portion. He won three in a row in the freestyle portion and was leading in the fourth match before he was pinned. Bond wrestled in the 140-pound Cadet division, but failed to advance.
Wagner, a former Montana state champion, placed third in state this year in Oregon. He lost to a wrestler from North Marion, Jake Stigall, at regionals and state. Wagner came back from the defeat at state to win four matches and take third. The losses to Stigall were his only of the season.
The Scappoose contingent scored 41 points at nationals and ended up fourth overall.
