WHAT: The LPGA Safeway Classic is back this week for its 40th year.
WHEN, WHERE: 54 holes, Friday through Sunday at Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club's Ghost Creek course in North Plains. Pro-am play concludes today.
THE FIELD: The Portland event typically draws one of the strongest fields on the LPGA Tour, and this year is no different. Of the top 100 players on the season money list, 97 are entered for the $1.5 million purse. All of the top 20 are playing.
Headliners include defending champion Ai Miyazato and world No. 1 Yani Tseng.

CHARITIES: Tourney proceeds benefit local children's charities. The tournament has raised more than $12 million during the past 15 years with Safeway as title sponsor, and more than $15 million has been donated in 39 years.
