Both Scappoose and St. Helens are preparing for Memorial Day services on the upcoming holiday.
The Scappoose Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 4362, will hold a 10:30 a.m. memorial service on May 28 at the veterans memorial between the Scappoose library and city hall. The service will include guest speaker retired U.S. Army Brigadier General Kenneth B. Ross, a rifle salute and a scheduled flyover.
The St. Helens Garden Club will also hold a brief ceremony at the veterans memorial in St. Helens' McCormick Park at 11 a.m. There will be a wreath laying followed by a moment of silence to honor fallen soldiers, said Garden Club member Lynn Chiotti.
The club is holding a community clean-up day at the St. Helens veterans memorial on May 26 at 10 a.m. to prepare the site for Memorial Day. Volunteers are welcome and should bring their own tools to help prune bushes, weed and spread bark dust.
