Hollis Maclean-Wenzel sets aside her job to continue her battle with cancer
Chamber Executive Director Hollis Maclean-Wenzel has given her resignation to the board of the Sandy Area Chamber of Commerce, according to Board President Laura Allen.
Maclean-Wenzel has held the position for 4½ years but six months ago she was diagnosed with breast cancer and has been undergoing treatment since.
She told the board she wants to spend more time with her family and continue her recovery. She told the Post Wednesday she would work part-time through June and help in the transition and training of her replacement.
The board announced that the position was open Wednesday and placed a notice on the Internet for applicants.
'Though we are saddened to learn this,' said Allen, 'the board fully supports her decision. We appreciate all of her contributions and will miss her energy and passion.'
Maclean-Wenzel says the illness has taken its toll on her energy level during the recovery process, but also has given her time to reassess her life.
'(My illness) has realigned my priorities,' she said. 'Right now, I realize the most important thing for me to do is focus on my recovery and spend time with my kids and my husband.'
Interim Executive Director Mitch Speck will continue in that position and help with the transition and training of the newly hired director, Allen said. The new hire is expected to be trained and ready to take over the job alone by the end of June.
