Scots come up short in seventh
Base-running mistakes kill any chance of a David Douglas comeback
CLACKAMAS - David Douglas had No. 3 seed Forest Grove on the ropes in the seventh inning Tuesday, but couldn't deliver the knock-out blow during a 3-1 loss in the first round of the 6A softball playoffs.
Trailing 3-1 heading into its final at-bats, the Scots amped up the pressure by stringing together three straight hits to start the seventh inning. Kristen LaFontain capped the hitting streak with a ball to left field that got caught in a harsh head wind and dropped inches in front of Alexis Richey's glove.
The hit would have loaded the bases, but the Scots lead runner was stuck in nowhere land by the fly ball, and Richey make a perfect throw to third base to get the force out by half a step.
Forest Grove pitcher Marisa Reichard struck out her sixth batter of the game, and catcher Karla Broderson caught Shatanya Fernandez trying to steal third for the final out.
