Feisty win for Scappoose 4x400 team

Indians' relay team holds off La Salle for hard-fought win in last race at state

The Scappoose High track team saved their best race of the night for the last one, bringing home a championship in the 4x400 meter relay.

Stephen Bowe, the only senior on the team anchored the race, and sophomores Mychal Hortert, Matt Shoun and Justice Oman held off a stubborn La Salle team for the title.

It wasn't looking good for the team before the race. Oman had come down sick after Friday's prelim and spent two hours sleeping in a car before the race.

La Salle had a slim lead in the race early, but Scappoose moved in front in the second lap. On the final lap, Bowe had to fend off the La Salle runner, who dogged him just outside a little too close for comfort for three-quarters of last leg.

'I punched a guy,' Bowe said. 'He ticked me off. He was really close all the way around. He tried to cut me off. I knew he'd be running a longer distance and just kept him off the (inside).'

Bowe kept Mark Holenstein of La Salle on the outside of him during the leg and pulled away to win by almost a second at the end.

'We missed the school record by a half a second, but these guys will get it next year,' Bowe said, gesturing to his teammates. 'That was fun,' he added.

Assistant coach Sean McNabb noted, 'This just shows me what this guy (Bowe) is all about.'

Bowe and Shoun had been part of the 4x100 team that had DQ'd in the prelims. That made the 4x400 victory all that much sweeter.

While the Indians sent a number of boys in other events, the only other final qualifier was Bowe in the 400. He took eighth there, so was very happy with the relay title in his last high school race.

Scappoose's Charlie Davidson did not disappoint in her two individual finals at state. She would finish second in the 1,500 that she won last year, and third in the 800, where she was fourth last season.

Davidson beat out Zoe Falk of Sisters for second in the 1,500, but junior Sierra Brown of Hidden Valley pulled away on the last lap to take first. Davidson was less than two seconds off her pace in last year's final.

'I tried to avoid getting boxed in,' Davidson said. 'We started off fast but starting out fast just gets you into the pace faster.'

She said she might have had a chance to win it, but didn't quite have enough left.

'I probably could have (run her down), but I think I tired myself out yesterday. It's a lot of running-five races in two days.'

Davidson ran in preliminary heats of the 800 and 4x400 relay the day before. She had an 800 and the relay after the 1,500.

She ran a spirited 800, again finishing behind Brown, by just a half-second, and less than two seconds behind Emily Bever of Molalla.

Scappoose would also pick up a few team points from Tia Carnahan who finished fifth in the 3,000 on Friday. She was fairly close to the next three places up, but not close to defending champ Alisha Luna of Klamath Union. She did have the satisfaction of beating freshman Charlotte Blakesley of Seaside, the runner who edged her out at district.

The Lady Indians also got an eighth place finish from the 4x400 relay team of Elise Harley, Julia Grabhorn, Ariel Viera, and Davidson.

Viera did not qualify for the finals in the 100 or 200, and Carly DiPietro made just the opening height in the pole vault.
