Chemical accident released hazardous fumes
A noxious vapor that has sent at least 11 people to the hospital has been contained at an inner-southeast Portland Darigold plant.
Emergency personnel responded Wednesday morning to a report of hazardous material at 2720 S.E. 6th Ave. This location is a Darigold Inc./West Farm Foods plant.
The preliminary investigation found that a worker mixing chemicals accidentally crossed some hose lines Wednesday morning. This caused a chemical reaction that released a chlorine-type gas.
The plant was not immediately evacuated and work continued even as firefighters in hazmat suits were getting ready to go inside the plant.
