Sunstone Montessori School finds new home in PPS building
New home meets need for growth, provides unified campus
SOUTHWEST - Sunstone Montessori School has signed a lease with Portland Public Schools to occupy the Terwilliger School building in Johns Landing along the Southwest Macadam Avenue corridor starting this fall.
Currently in two locations, SMS will relocate both campuses to the site in time to start the 2012-13 school year as a single, unified campus serving ages 2 and a half through 12.
'This is a wonderful opportunity not just for the current families of Sunstone Montessori School but for the entire Portland community,' said Cathy Newman, Head of School at SMS. 'This site allows for growth and is much more accessible to all of Portland - east side and west side. For our current families it offers the togetherness we have been working toward for over five years. We look forward to making a difference.'
The nonprofit Sunstone Montessori School has outgrown its existing facilities. The Elementary School campus located in the Bridlemile neighborhood, which houses grades 1-6, is currently waitlisted, and the Multnomah Village Children's House campus for children ages two and a half to six is starting an all-year Montessori program this fall. The Terwilliger site provides the necessary space to meet the growing needs of Sunstone, both now and into the future.
'Montessori classrooms thrive with mixed age groups, 2 ½ - 6, 6 - 9 and 9 - 12 years respectively,' Newman said. 'The integration of the ages allows the children to be mentors, share their talents, develop confidence and leadership as well as learn from each other and strengthen their challenges. …We are so excited to finally have a single campus that will accentuate and support the benefits of Montessori.'
