Officer not injured during Friday morning confrontation
Police have arrested a man who allegedly struck an officer with his car Friday morning.
The officer was not injured.
Percival Jeffrey Stewart III, 46, is charged with assaulting a police officer, attempt to elude by vehicle, attempt to elude on foot, and reckless driving.
According to police, on June 1, East Precinct officers were on foot patrol in the area of Southeast 162nd Avenue and Stark Street. At approximately 8:58 a.m., they contacted the occupant of a vehicle stopped in the parking lot of Sam's Hideaway, located at 545 Southeast 162nd Avenue.
As an officer was walking in front of the car, the driver stepped on the gas and hit the officer in the lower legs, then sped out of the parking lot. The officer did not suffer any major injury as a result of being hit by the car.
Officers located the car a few blocks away and witnesses told police that the suspect fled on foot into an apartment complex. Officers and a Portland Police K-9 Unit conducted a neighborhood search for the suspect and were able to arrest him in an apartment in the Crofton Apartments complex.
Stewart was booked into the Multnomah County Jail.
