Middleton Elementary School Principal Marianne Funderhide has been named as the new principal of Sherwood Middle School.
The vacancy at Sherwood Middle School is due to the promotion of Gary Bennett, who was recently named to serve as the district's chief academic officer beginning July 1.
Funderhide joined the District in 1992 and taught physical education at Sherwood Middle School, where she later served as a teacher on special assignment and then as associate principal for two years. She became the principal at Middleton Elementary last year during a restructuring of the district's administrative team.
'While Ms. Funderhide has done a tremendous job at Middleton and we intended for her to serve there for several years, we could not deny her the opportunity to return to Sherwood Middle School, where we know her heart for this particular age-group and staff is so deeply rooted,' said Superintendent Heather Cordie.
The district will begin the process of recruiting and selecting a principal for Middleton Elementary immediately. While unlikely that a hire will be announced prior to the last day of school, steps are being taken to ensure that staff and parents are included in the selection process. A brief reception will be held in late June to announce the decision and allow staff and families to meet the new principal.
'Although short, it has been a privilege and a rewarding experience at Middleton Elementary,' said Funderhide. 'This was a very emotional decision for me, and I will miss the extraordinary staff and students I have come to know this year. On the same note, this is an exciting opportunity and I am eager to follow my calling as the leader of Sherwood Middle School.'
