UPDATE • Police give up trying to contact nearby suicidal woman
A Southwest Portland school remained in lock-down Monday afternoon, even after police officers discontinued attempts to contact a suicidal woman who reportedly was armed in a nearby home.
Police said in the early afternoon that they were giving up attempts to talk with the woman. Police had been working for more than three hours to contact her.
Officers asked for Hayhurst School, 5037 S.W. Iowa St., stay locked down until school is released for the day. Then, students will only be released through the school's front door.
The school is a few hundred feet from the house where police tried to contact the woman.
The incident began at 10:15 a.m., when Central Precinct officers responded to the report of a suicidal female armed with a gun inside a residence in the 5100 block of Southwest Fairvale Court. The woman was believed to be alone in the residence and officers attempted to contact her by phone throughout the morning.
