Trolley Trail dedicated
Carolyn Vernon and Bill Binnis welcomed visitors aboard the 1932 vintage trolley rolled out last Saturday, June 2, for the gala opening of the Trolley Trail at Oak Grove Elementary School.
The car is the only one left from a fleet that ran along the Interurban Line from Island Station to Oregon City, noted Richard Thompson, who has written a book about the trolleys.
The streetcar line ran from 1893 until 1968.
Vernon noted that the trolley car is the exact one operated by her father-in-law Marion Vernon. Binnis, the treasurer of the Oregon Electric Railway Historical Society, said he too had operated the car many times.
Hundreds of people attended the Trolley Trail event to listen to guest speakers, like Thelma Haggenmiller and Dick Jones, who founded Friends of the Trolley Trail, an organization instrumental in bringing the 6-mile trail into existence.
