Majors finish up Wednesday; Minors continue through next Monday
The annual Columbia County Little League Majors Tournament of Champions was down to just two teams by Tuesday night, scheduled for a championship game on Wednesday in Clatskanie.
The tournament started on Saturday and by the end of the day Sunday, just four teams remained.
Eight teams played on Saturday with four advancing to play four seeded teams.
On Saturday, Hometown Pizza of Rainier had one more topping than Fultano's Pizza, posting a 13-12 win in the first game. Portrait Homes downed St. Helens Auto Center 10-7 in the next game, and Beaver Heat beat JY Consulting. Semling's posted a hard-fought, 2-0 win over Evenson's in the night cap.
On Sunday, Dow Bros. beat Semlings, 12-8. Hometown Pizza followed with a 10-0 win over Dutch Bros. of St. Helens. Carr Construction whipped Portrait Homes, 11-1, and the St. Helens Community Federal Credit Union (SHCFCU) outscored Beaver Heat, 17-6.
That put Carr Construction up against Hometown Pizza on Monday night and SHCFCU against Dow Bros on Tuesday. Carr Construction advanced to the finals with a 6-1 win. They'll face the winner of the Dow Bros. and SHCFCU game in the championship on Wednesday night.
The Minors TOC got under way on Saturday as well with a double elimination tournament. No scores, but just the winners were reported.
Five games were played on Saturday in the double elimination tournament: Sunshine Pizza of St. Helens advanced in the winner's bracket with a win over NW Structural of Scappoose; Papa Murphy's of St. Helens downed Troyco of Scappoose; NPI of St. Helens posted a win over Lower Columbia Insurance of Rainier; Dr. Valachi of St. Helens topped Pacific Service of Scappoose; and Dutch Bros. of Scappoose beat Brackin of Rainier.
Sunday's games saw Sunshine Pizza make it to the winner's bracket semifinals with a win over Valardi Electric of Rainier. Papa Murphy's downed Steinfeld's of Scappoose to set up a showdown with Sunshine. NPI whipped Dr. Valachi, while both Dutch Bros. (St. Helens and Scappoose) teams faced off. The St. Helens Dutch Bros. won, making it an all-St. Helens winner's bracket semifinals. One of the teams will play in the championship game.
One loser's bracket game was also played on Sunday. Lower Columbia Insurance eliminated Pacific Service.
Monday's games pitted NW Structural against Dutch Bros. of Scappoose and Troyco against Dr. Valachi. Dutch Bros. and Troyco advanced, while the others were eliminated. Tuesday's games had Brackin versus Valardi Electric and Lower Columbia Insurance against Steinfeld's.
The winner's bracket semifinals are slated for Wednesday. The two winners will play on Saturday at 10 a.m., while the losers of the Wednesday game play on Friday at 6 p.m.
The championship game is slated for 6 p.m., Monday. If the unbeaten team loses, a second championship game will be held at 6 p.m., Tuesday.
