Local athletes and youngsters have plenty of opportunities to improve this summer
Scappoose and St. Helens coaches and others have slated a number of summer camps designed to help young athletes improve their skills.
They include several basketball camps, the annual Derek Anderson Football camp, and a volleyball camp. Camps range from a few days up to two weeks.
There are also some sign-ups for youth sports.
The following includes those camps and others where information was provided.
Derek Anderson football camp Saturday
The sixth annual Derek Anderson football camp will be held at the Scappoose High football field from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, June 16.
The camp features a photo with Anderson and a chance to meet and learn from current and former NFL players. Past guests have included Steven Jackson, Sterling Sharpe, Bill Swancutt, and Mike Hass among others.
The $40 cost of the camp also includes a T-shirt and football.

Youth football sign-ups being taken through July 1
Sign-ups for youth football in Scappoose are being taken through July 1.
The youth football teams are comprised of third through sixth graders, and all incoming third through sixth graders are eligible to sign-up and play.
The cost to register for the 2012 season will be $180 through June 15 or $200 after that date.
Registration is available online by going to Scappoose Youth Football on the Scappoose Youth Sports website. Play begins in August.
Summer skill basketball clinic set for July
A summer skills basketball clinic will be held on Mondays and Wednesdays in July at either the high school or Petersen Elementary in Scappoose.
Clinics are scheduled for July 2, 9, 11, 16, 18, 23, and 25. The last two dates are at Petersen.
Youngsters in third grade and up are not required to sign-up, but just need to show up. A $5 donation is requested, but larger contributions are gladly accepted.
The clinics are run by the Scappoose High coaching staff and focus on fundamentals and offensive moves. Particular attention is placed on shooting form, footwork, ball handling, offensive moves, spacing on the floor, and attacking the defense.
Lady Indians basketball camp June 12-15
The Scappoose Lady Indians will host a basketball camp for Columbia County girls 4-14 years of age.
The camp is slated for Tuesday, June 12 through Friday, June 15 in the Otto H.H. Petersen gym.
The camp is being run by head Coach Buell Gonzales, assistants and high school players.
The cost of the camp is $40. Youngsters may mail in registrations or register at the door.
Indians slate basketball camp June 11-14
The Scappoose Indians, 2012 Cowapa League Champions, will host a basketball camp at Scappoose High School June 11-14.
The morning session (9 a.m. -noon) is for incoming 3-6-graders and the afternoon session (1-4 p.m.) is for grades 7-9.
The camp includes a T-shirt for each participant, individual evaluations, shooting competitions, one-on-one instruction, plus high school and college guest speakers. There will be a strong focus on individual skill work, and individual drills.
The cost of the camp is $60. There is a price break of $50 each for families with more than one family member participating.

St. Helens boys' basketball camp
St. Helens High boys' basketball Coach Jerry Allen will hold a two-week camp for incoming fifth through eighth graders, starting June 18.
Players may attend either week, or both. Cost is $125 for one week and $200 for both.
The camp runs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. each day, Monday through Friday, June 18-22, and June 25-29.
Allen said that instruction will be provided by himself, assistant coaches, and high school players. The camp will be held at the St. Helens Middle School, at least for the first three days.
St. Helens volleyball camp
A youth volleyball camp will be held at St. Helens High School June 18-21 for incoming grades 5-8.
St. Helens coach Tom Ray, assistant coaches, and players will run the camp.
The camp runs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. each day.
A volleyball fitness camp will be held at the high school from 9 a.m.-noon each day, Aug. 14-16. Tryouts will be held Aug. 20-24.
