Crime spree suspect arrested inside Fred Meyer
David William Chilton taken into custody late Tuesday
Police arrested the man wanted in a series of violent crimes inside the Fred Meyer store at North Interstate Avenue and Lombard Street late Tuesday.
David William Chilton, 54, was taken into custody around 10:15 p.m. He is accused of pulling a gun on a Portland State University security guard, robbing a bank and stealing an SUV on Monday. The SUV was recovered in the Fred Meyer parking lot.
The city's Special Emergency Reaction Team and crisis negotiators were called out to the scene.
Police first responded at about 8:47 p.m. Tuesday to a report of an armed man inside the store. Officers contained the man inside and called for SERT to handle the situation.
TriMet officials warned that the police activity forced 'major delays' on the MAX Yellow Line that lasted throughout the night.
