Wigwam Sox 5-2 in summer ball

Trey Norton throws a one-hitter

The La Salle Wigwam Sox are off to a 5-2 start in Junior State summer baseball.

They've earned wins over Sandy (11-4), Cleveland (14-9), Benson (5-3), Central Catholic (6-0) and Reynolds (9-3). The losses were in games with Portland Christian (3-1) and Canby (12-2).

Senior Trey Norton threw a one-hitter in last Friday's win over Reynolds, striking out six and walking five, while allowing no earned runs.

Reynolds' only hit was a two-out single in the top of the fifth.

'[Trey] walked too many kids,' said La Salle coach Mike Reed. 'But in view of the fact that we hadn't practiced in six days because of finals last week, he pitched well.'

Despite Norton's one-hit pitching, it wasn't until the fifth inning that the Sox put their guests away. Trailing 3-1, the Sox pounded out five hits and scored six runs in the pivotal inning.

Junior Austin Vaughn got things started when he drew a lead-off walk. Norton reached on an error, and senior Sam Eichhorn plated two runs with a two-bagger.

Consecutive singles by juniors Connor Shride, Luke Kolln (2-for-2) and Cole Devore (2-for-3) brought two more runs around. Junior Dane Maben (2-for-4) singled and Mike Duarte forced in a run when he reached as a hit batsman. Vaughn rounded out the rally, squeezing in the sixth run.

Playing shorthanded, the Sox fell to Canby 12-2 on Saturday in their league opener. The Sox got out-hit 11-2 in the loss.

'We were missing five guys, four who would have started,' said Reed.
