Old Time Fair princess project encourages reading

After receiving a large number of bookmark submissions, the 2012 Old Time Fair court collectively decided on four winners, who were announced June 3. The winners are Andrei Bell, Angelina Walsh, Khemavo Bandara and Natalia Phillips.

Princess Olivia Steele honored the children for their accomplishments by bringing treats to their classrooms and presenting certificates.

This project highlighted the importance of getting children to enjoy reading early on in their lives. It also helped the kids open their minds to imagination and creativity. The theme of the bookmark contest was "Read Around the Block," in concert with the Old Time Fair theme, "Rock Around the Block."

Visit the West Linn Public Library to pick up a "Read Around the Block" bookmark. They will also be distributed at the West Linn Old Time Fair and parade.

The contest is a community service project organized by Steele, who believes that a love of reading will help children succeed in school. Steele will be a freshman at West Linn High School in the fall.
