Summer's bounty

Weekly market brings produce, entertainment

The West Linn Farmers' Market is off to a great start this year, with nearly 40 vendors and an expanded food court.

The market officially opened with a summer solstice celebration on June 20, where pirates sang, danced and entertained the throngs of shoppers.by: VERN UYETAKE - Xiong Ju of Xiong's Garden prepares a bouquet of flowers at the West Linn farmers market.

Located at the corner of 13th Avenue and Willamette Falls Drive in the historic Willamette neighborhood, the market is open every Wednesday from 5 to 8 p.m. through Sept. 19.

"Our opening summer solstice celebration, put on by the local Historic Willamette's Main Street organization, brought in a great crowd," market manager Miles McCoy said. "We are close to sold out this year, so we are looking at an expansion."

While looking at fruits and veggies may be fun for adults, the market has entertainment for the little ones, too. The Dragon Theater Puppets are scheduled for weekly shows at the market.

"We have found this older style of entertainment is very popular," McCoy said.

The market is planning other special days, including an Aug. 1 Dog Days event that will focus on pets and pet care.

The farmers' market features fresh, local produce, flowers, organic goods, breads, art, children's activities, live music and wine tasting.
