John A. Carlson

June 20, 1925-June 17, 2012

Lake Oswego resident John "Poppie" A. Carlson died June 17, 2012, in his home.

He would have celebrated his 87th birthday on June 20.

Mr. Carlson was born in Portland to Olga and Andrew Carlson on June 20, 1925. He graduated from Seaside High School in 1943, then joined the Civil Service and worked at the Naval Station in Fairbanks, Alaska.

Mr. Carlson married the love of his life, June Grohs, on May 16, 1948; they celebrated 63 years of marriage in 2011.He worked 55 years for General Motors, retiring from Wentworth Chevrolet in 1996. He was an award-winning parts manager, and was well known in the automotive industry.

After retiring, he volunteered at the Lake Oswego Adult Community Center, delivering lunches and good cheer; he and his wife were active in the center's exercise programs.

Mr. Carlson was recognized for his cheerful, optimistic love of life.

He is survived by his daughter, Julie (Ray) Gehlbach of West Linn; grandchildren, Annie (Kevin) Schilperoort, Katie Schmidt, Jonathan Peachey, Christian (Katie) Haglund and Jennifer (Justin) Batty; sister, Marilyn Staley of Seaside; nieces, Nancy Olson-Chatalas, Rosemary Swenson, Connie Staley and Judy Staley; several great-grand nieces and nephews; and six great-grandchildren.

Mr. Carlson was preceded in death by his wife Nov. 9, 2011, and his daughter, Johanna Haglund, in 1996.

A memorial service will be held Friday, July 6, at 2 p.m. at Riverwest Church in Lake Oswego.
