Chariteas tea house hosts its first World Tea Tasting Tour Saturday
Venture to China, Japan and Sri Lanka with Chariteas' first World Tea Tasting Tour this weekend.
At 10 a.m. Saturday, June 23, the tea house will kick off the event with Chado, a Japanese tea ceremony focused on peace, harmony, beauty and art.
Tea time continues with a demonstration of a Chinese tea ceremony and a Sri Lankan tea tasting, and will continue with repeated ceremonies and tastings every hour through 2 p.m.
Chariteas dubs the event as delicious, enjoyable and just the little vacation you've been awaiting. Best of all, it's free.
Together, Charity Chalmers, owner, and Katey Linkous, an employee, have taken a Chado class in Southwest Portland out of their teacher's home since December. And in May, they spent a week together visiting a tea farm in Japan.
Linkous says learning how significant tea ceremonies are to these cultures has been enlightening and inspired her interest in sustainable agriculture - the major she plans to pursue at Portland State University.
"Tea history is a hidden part of the world," Linkous says. "I've fallen in love with it."
Chalmers, Linkous and Shaylee Tjostolvsonwill lead the World Tea Tasting Tour on Saturday.
In addition to the ceremonies and tastings, the gift shop is offering a retail sale.
Chariteas is at 38687 Proctor Blvd. For information, call 503-826-1900.
