James C. Chinchen

March 22, 1934-July 7, 2012

Portland resident James C. Chinchen died Saturday, July 7, at his home. He was 78.

At his request, no memorial service will take place. Interment will be at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland.

James was born March 22, 1934, in Worland, Wyo., to Bill and Ann (Eckhardt) Chinchen. James grew up in Portland and graduated from Gresham High School in 1952. He served in the Coast Guard from 1952 to 1956.

James worked for the U.S. Postal Service as a letter carrier for 32 years before retiring in 1989. He was divorced.

James was a member of the Elks for 52 years. He enjoyed bowling, motorcycle riding and gaming. Later he enjoyed maintaining his home and yard and AND , following the Chicago Cubs.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Richard, and daughter, Terri.

Survivors include his son, Tyler Chinchen of Gresham, and two granddaughters.

Sallie Jo Rouw

June 7, 1929-July 17, 2012

Former Orient area resident Sallie Jo Rouw died Tuesday, July 10. She was 83.

Sallie RouwA funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 17, at Sandy Funeral Home, 39551 Pleasant St. Entombment will follow at Lincoln Memorial Park in Portland.

Sallie was born June 7, 1929, in Bear Creek Springs, Ark., to Grant and Mamie Crawford. When Sallie was 9, the family moved to Oregon and made their home in Gresham, where Sallie was raised and educated.

On April 14, 1946, she married James Rouw. They resided in Portland and raised their three children.

Once Sallie’s children were grown, she began working as a pharmacy assistant. After her husband retired, Sally took an early retirement so they were able to travel.

Sallie loved her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, flowers and spending time outdoors. She gave freely of her time and resources to her church, family and friends. Sallie also loved sewing, needlepoint and gardening.

Her husband and her brother, Donald, preceded her in death.

Survivors include her son, Micheal Rouw of Milwaukie; daughters, Patricia Miller of Portland and Karen Chalberg of Portland; four grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Russell Vernon Cropley

July 28, 1933-March 12, 2012

Former East County resident Russell Vernon Cropley, 78, died Monday, March 12, in Yuma, Ariz.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 28, at Wood Village Baptist Church, 23601 W. Arata Road, Wood Village.

Russ was born July 28, 1933, in Monterey, Calif., to Robert and Vivian Cropley. Russ graduated from Monterey Union High School in 1952 and served in the Navy with the Seabees on the Aleutian Islands off Alaska. After his Navy service, Russ received his bachelor’s degree in industrial arts from San Jose State College and his master’s degree in vocational education administration from Oregon State University.

Russ’ career in education spanned 33 years. He worked as a teacher, administrator and principal in California, Oregon, Alaska and Washington. He taught industrial arts and vocational carpentry in the Reynolds School District from 1971 to 1982, and served as head of the teachers’ union.

During his retirement, Russ traveled and served as a volunteer and construction supervisor on several church building projects. He served his church congregations in numerous ways, especially through music. He produced a CD of some of his favorite gospel music. He was active in the Gresham Kiwanis and served as a chapter president in Roseville, Calif.

He was preceded in death by three brothers and a sister.

Survivors include Elaine Cropley, his wife of 56 years; children, Jeff Cropley of Fort Worth, Texas, Dion McClure of Vancouver, Wash., Scott Cropley of Vancouver, Leslie Grande of Eagle River, Alaska, and Sally Fantasia of Sacramento, Calif.; brother, Greg Culver of Monterey; 13 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

L. Dwight Custis

June 21, 1920-July 11, 2012

Pastor L. Dwight Custis, a resident of Gresham, died Wednesday, July 11. He was 92.

L. Dwight CurtisA funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, July 19, at Trinity Bible Church, 14333 N.E. Whitaker Way, Portland. A graveside service will follow at Lincoln Memorial Park and Funeral Home in Portland.

Dwight was born June 21, 1920, in Tacoma, Wash., to William and Cecil Bertha Custis, the first of seven children. Dwight was ordained as a minister at age 19 by his home church, Temple Baptist, and delivered his first sermon at age 18. Dwight attended Baylor University in Waco, Texas, and met Edith Lucille Mouton. They were married in January 1943.

Under World War II provisions intended to prepare military chaplains, Dwight was allowed to complete his master’s at Dallas Theological Seminary before earning his bachelor’s degree. He completed his bachelor’s in philosophy and psychology at British Columbia University in 1951 and was then granted his master’s degree in theology from Dallas Theological Seminary.

Dwight pastored churches in Beaumont, Texas, Vancouver, British Columbia, and Santa Barbara, Calif. He taught at Multnomah School of the Bible (now Multnomah University) and later served as pastor at Trinity Bible Church from 1981 to 2012. He gave his final sermon in January. He also had a program on KPDQ radio.

Survivors include his wife; children, L. Dwight Custis Jr. of Southlake, Texas, John Custis of Gresham, Carolyn Custis James of Boxford, Mass., and Gary Custis of Tigard; brother, Bryce Custis of Tacoma; eight grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.

Shirley Ann Ogle

Jan. 11, 1935-July 13, 2012

Shirley Ann Ogle, a resident of Boring, died Friday, July 13. She was 77.

Shirley OgleVisitation hours will be held from noon to 8 p.m. Tuesday, July 17, followed by a funeral service at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 18, both at Gresham Memorial Chapel, 257 S.E. Roberts Ave.

Shirley was born Jan. 11, 1935, at White Salmon, Wash., to Les and Verna (Smith) Harrington. She moved to Gresham in 1945 and attended Orient Grade School and Gresham High School. Shirley graduated from Gresham High School in 1953.

On June 18, 1955, she married Claude Ogle in Gresham.

In 1963, Shirley and Claude purchased Harrington’s Poultry from her parents. Besides running the poultry business, Shirley inherited the Pink Feather restaurant, in which she was actively involved for 13 years, retiring in 2008.

Shirley enjoyed garage sales, working in the garden, traveling, watching her children and grandchildren play sports and collecting basketball cards. She was a Trail Blazers fan, Clyde Drexler being her favorite player. Shirley played Bunco with the same group of ladies for 42 years. She was a survivor, beating breast cancer 37 years ago.

Her granddaughter Jessica Ogle preceded her in death in 2010.

Survivors include her husband; daughters, K’Lynn Ogle of Boring and Kimberly Ogle Anderson of Alamo, Calif.; son, Scott Ogle of Boring; and four grandchildren.

William “Bill” Francis Daniel

July 20, 1940-June 23, 2012

William “Bill” Francis Daniel, a resident of Troutdale, died on June 23, 2012, just shy of his 72nd birthday in Thermopolis, Wyo.

Bill DanielA memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, July 28, at Hinson Memorial Baptist Church, 1137 S.E. 20th Ave., Portland. Interment was at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland.

Bill was born July 20, 1940, in Hermiston to Floyd and Ruth (Gill) Daniel. He graduated from high school in Echo and received his bachelor’s degree from Oregon State University and his master’s degree from American University in Washington, D.C.

In 1963, he married Darlene Korb in Portland. They moved to Troutdale in 1995.

Bill worked for the U.S. Department of Agriculture for nearly 40 years, starting his career in Baker City and later moving to Portland to work in the state office. He transferred to Washington, D.C., where he wrote USDA government regulations. He returned to the Oregon state office, where he retired in 2004.

Bill concurrently served in the Army National Guard and Reserves. As a part of his 30-year service, he was sent to Germany eight times. He retired in October 2000 as chief warrant officer 4.

Bill was a devoted member of Hinson Memorial Baptist Church, where he served as an usher and assisted in straightening the sanctuary. He taught woodworking skills at the church Kid’s Club and conducted summer backyard Bible study programs in his home for neighborhood children. He also volunteered with Young Life and World View, helped to restore two homes damaged by the Vernonia Flood, and traveled on seven missions to Mexico, two to Canada and one to Germany. His hobbies and pastimes including gardening, canning, rug making, woodworking, masonry and reading.

His brother Eddie preceded him in death.

Survivors include his wife; children, Donna Erwin and Craig Daniel, both of Troutdale; brother, Bob Daniel of Hermiston; four grandchildren; and his dog, Darcy Mae.

Darrol L. Ford

Troutdale resident Darrol L. Ford, 77, died Sunday, July 8.

At his request, no services will be held.

Darrol FordDarrol was born Aug. 16, 1934, in Atkinson, Neb., to Charles and Edna (Stege) Ford. Darrol moved to the Northwest when he was 11 years old and graduated from Kelso High School.

On May 3, 1984, Darrol married Barbara (Harris) Calhoun in Lake Havasu, Ariz.

Darrol worked in construction, retiring in 1996. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and playing cards.

Survivors include his wife; children, Larry Calhoun of Gresham, Gary Calhoun of Vancouver, Wash., Jerry Calhoun, Kerry Calhoun of Troutdale and Shelly Ford of Beaverton; brothers, Jerry Ford of Kelso, Wash., and Mickey Ford of Curlew, Wash.; sister, Mary Jo Ramento of Anderson, Calif.; 11 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Ruby Argirene Pearson

March 29, 1914-May 20, 2012

Gresham resident Ruby Argirene Pearson, 98, died Sunday, May 20.

Ruby PearsonA memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, July 21, at Trinity Lutheran Church, 507 W. Powell Blvd.

Ruby was born March 29, 1914, in Dassel, Minn., to Richard and Clara (Palm) Anderson. She graduated from high school and attended Lutheran Bible Institute in Minneapolis. She became a nurse in 1939 through the vocational hospital in South Minneapolis. She graduated with honors from Honolulu Business College in 1961.

In 1942, she married Richard McFarlin. He preceded her in death. In 1963, she married William Pearson. He preceded her in death.

Ruby worked as a secretary and nurse. She resided in Hawaii, California and Oregon. She was an avid golfer and made her 28th hole-in-one when she was 90. She also enjoyed crafts, quilting and exercising.

She was preceded in death by her brothers, Russel Anderson, Don Anderson, Linden Anderson and Lowell Anderson; and sister, Hazel Hanson.

Survivors include her daughters, Patricia Johnson of Gresham and Mary Mortenson of Klamath Falls; brother, John Anderson of Minneapolis; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Mary Edna Preskey

Gresham resident Mary Edna Preskey, 81, died Saturday, May 19.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 21, at 1650 N.W. First St., Gresham.

Mary PreskeyMary was born Jan. 8, 1931, in Portland to Kenneth and Adeline (Peggy) Hahm.

Mary was an active member and past president of the Gresham Women of the Elks, a performer in its dance troupe, the 1805 Players, and co-founder of Eastco Diversified Services for adults with developmental disabilities.

Mary’s favorite activities included traveling in her motor home, crafting and fishing.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert; and stepson, David.

Survivors include her children, Joy Pittman of Condon, Dale Johnson of Thailand, Valeri Johnson of Boulder Creek, Calif., and Cary Preskey of Sedro-Woolley, Wash.; and stepdaughters, Carol Cord of Troutdale, Debbie Tombe of Gresham and Janice Kelly of Portland.
