Summer weeds identification class offered

The city of Gresham is hosting a free Summer Weeds Identification Workshop from 6:30-8 p.m. Thursday, July 19, at Gresham City Hall, 1333 N.W. Eastman Parkway.

Learn about the invasive weeds residents can watch for in Gresham throughout the summer months and how to identify and eradicate them. No RSVP is required.

Troutdale restaurant fined $65,000

Shirley’s Tippy Canoe restaurant in Troutdale received a $65,783 penalty to for operating a septic system without the required state permit since November 2009, the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality announced.

Owner Shirley Ann Welton has until July 25 to appeal the penalty.

DEQ said the permit is important as it imposes operating and monitoring requirements to ensure the sewage is properly treated and disposed. DEQ also issued Welton an order requiring her to submit an application for a permit and approval plans for construction of a system. The order also requires construction of the system to begin within 60 days of DEQ’s approval of the plans.

DEQ said if Welton installs a functioning, permitted system, the agency will consider recalculating her costs and will reduce the penalty accordingly.

Summer fun coming Saturday to Coffee Cabin

Liz’s Coffee Cabin will host a day of summer fun from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, July 21. The day’s events include live music, line dancing, raffles and more.

The free event is at 31925 E. Historic Columbia River Highway in Troutdale.

Teens present Four Cities Peer Court

Area teens with the Four Cities Peer Court will conduct a demonstration and presentation for the public at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 18, at Fairview City Hall, 1300 N.E. Village St.

The Four Cities Peer Court consists of teenagers who act as attorneys, bailiffs and jurors to other youth who are charged with low-level offenses for the first time. Participating teens learn about the law, get recommendations and help fellow teens.
