Police will focus on pedestrian safety

Gresham police will conduct a pedestrian safety operation at two marked crosswalks Wednesday, July 25, to raise awareness of pedestrian safety through education and enforcing pedestrian right-of-way laws.

The enforcement will be between 8 a.m. and noon at the intersections of Northeast Roberts Avenue and Division Street, and East Powell Boulevard and Southeast Roberts Avenue.

Warning signs will be posted prior to entering the pedestrian safety operation zone, said Officer Malaka Kerbs.

Motorists must stop and yield to pedestrians who are waiting to cross or are crossing the roadway. Motorists also are required to stop at all crosswalks when there is a vehicle already stopped in a lane adjacent to the lane they are traveling in.

Funding for this pedestrian safety detail is through a grant from the Bicycle Transportation Alliance and the Oregon Department of Transportation. The grants prohibit the safety detail from taking place during rainy weather.

Additional enforcement efforts will be scheduled throughout the summer to coincide with the start of the new school year.
