Scappoose gym sees one of their own rise to the Ultimate Fighting Championship
A rising star in the world of mixed martial arts - and co-owner of The Barn gym in Scappoose - is preparing for a UFC fight in Brazil this Saturday.
While Ian 'The Barn Owl' Loveland takes on Yves 'Tiger' Jabouin in Rio de Janeiro Aug. 27, his friends, students and business partners at The Barn will be watching him on pay per view.
'I'm thinking he's going to win, take him to the ground and pound him out,' said Mike Baker, 42, who owns and operates The Barn MMA and Fitness gym with Loveland, 27, Travis Sue, 40, and Cody Delashmit, 28.
Baker fronted the money for the newly opened business after witnessing first-hand the impact mixed martial arts (MMA) had on his son Mike Baker Jr., who goes by John. Baker Jr. is 20 now and a competing MMA fighter and trainer at The Barn, but six years ago he began down a path of drugs and other bad behavior.
But after taking classes under Loveland when the Team Quest training camp used to operate out of the Scappoose Fitness Center, Baker Jr. went straight.
'Ian took him under his wing,' Baker said. 'He's basically a model citizen today.'
This spring, Baker made a call to Loveland, who lives out of the area, asking him to be a part of The Barn venture. Loveland signed up right away and now teaches classes along with his wife Kitty, Delashmit and Baker Jr.
The overall goal of the gym, Delashmit said, is to give people young and old a place to learn new skills and get in shape. It's not about the fight, but the fitness, he said. Unlike in the octagon, students wear lots of pads and protection to ensure their safety.
'Everyone pretty much checks their ego at the door,' Delashmit said.
