Julian “Sandy” George Shokey

Feb. 11, 1938-July 18, 2012

Julian “Sandy” George Shokey, a resident of Boring, died Wednesday, July 18, at Legacy Mount Hood Medical Center. He was 74.

A funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 24, at St. Michael Catholic Church, 18090 S.E. Langensand Road, Sandy. Viewing will begin prior to the service at 10 a.m. Burial will follow at 2 p.m. at Forest Lawn Cemetery, 400 S.W. Walters Drive.

Sandy was born Feb. 11, 1938, in Bay Shore, N.Y., to Julius and Wilhelmina (Brandes) Shokey. He grew up on Long Island, graduating from high school in 1955. After graduation he attended New York State Maritime College and graduated in 1959 with a degree in marine engineering.

After college and during his time in the Naval Reserve, Sandy was stationed in Hawaii, where he met Oregon farm girl Betty Leber. They were married Sept. 30, 1961, in Gresham. The couple moved back to New York and started their family, having two daughters. Sandy completed his master’s degree in engineering management at Long Island University in 1969.

In 1971, the family moved to Oregon and settled in Boring. Sandy began his career at Freightliner, working there until his retirement in 1993. In retirement he ran a small Christmas tree farm at his home.

Sandy enjoyed vegetable and flower gardening. He was an excellent woodworker, designing and building fine furniture for his family. He also loved playing cards with family and friends. He was a member of St. Michael Catholic Church since 1971 and an active volunteer, contributing his handyman skills and lawn care expertise.

His wife preceded him in death in 2009.

Survivors include his daughters, Janna Kampen of Anchorage, Alaska, and Denise Cummins of Lebanon; sister, Gloria Burns of Rockwood, Maine; brother, Arthur Shokey of Boring; and three grandchildren.

Contributions may be made to St. Michael Catholic Church, 18090 S.E. Langensand Road, Sandy, 97055.

Michael “Frank” Kirwan

Jan. 16, 1929-July 15, 2012

Gresham resident Michael “Frank” Kirwan died Sunday, July 15, as a result of long-term effects from multiple strokes, surrounded by family. He was 83.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, July 26, at St. Henry Catholic Church, 346 N.W. First St.

Caroline Miller

March 14, 1930-July 18, 2012

Gresham resident Caroline Miller, 82, died Wednesday, July 18.

Viewing hours will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, July 27, at Bateman Carroll Funeral Home, 520 W. Powell Blvd. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 28, at Forest Lawn Cemetery, 400 S.W. Walters Drive.

Caroline was born March 14, 1930, in Clearfield, S.D., to Alvina and Albert Engelgau. She had five siblings.

On Oct. 14, 1950, she married Henry Miller.

Caroline was a homemaker. When she and Henry bought their own business, she was the bookkeeper. They moved to Gresham in 1991.

She was preceded in death by her husband, who died Feb. 12, 1997; sisters, Mildred Wetz and Gertrude Behrens; and brother, Albert Engelgau.

Survivors include her daughters, Joli Ritchie of Portland and Janine Worthen of New Braunfels, Texas; sister, Naomi Stewart of Portland; brother, Herman Engelgau of Clackamas; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Ken Moss

April 6, 1943-July 21, 2012

Gresham resident Ken Moss, 69, died Saturday, July 21.

A service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, July 27, in Centennial High School’s auditorium, 3505 S.E. 182nd Ave. A reception will follow in the cafeteria.

Ken was born April 6, 1943, in Olympia, Wash., to Kenneth and Frances Moss. He resided in Naselle, Wash., and Svensen as a child. He graduated from Knappa High School in 1961 and played basketball at Portland State University while earning his degree.

In 1970, he married Katherine Peel. They raised their two children in Gresham.

Ken was a teacher, coach, and counselor for 34 years, primarily at Centennial High School. He worked at Nestucca, Hood River and Gresham High School as well.

Ken was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed fishing, hunting and attending his grandchildren’s sporting events.

Survivors include his wife; children, Brian Moss of Hermiston and Jennifer Cullers of Gaston; his mother, of Svensen; sisters, Phyllis of Renton, Wash., and Kim of Knappa; and three grandchildren.

Eva “Eve” Mae Hubacek

Jan. 15, 1938-July 12, 2012

Former Gresham resident Eva “Eve” Mae Hubacek, 74, died Thursday, July 12.

A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 11, at Lynchwood Church of God, 3818 S.E. 174th Ave.

Eve was born Jan. 15, 1938, in Mercedes, Texas, to Edd and Ruby Moore. She was raised in Portland and graduated from Gresham High School in 1956. She attended Warner Pacific College.

On June 27, 1957, Eve married Richard Louis Hubacek at Lents Gilbert Church in Portland.

Eve joined her husband in the ministry in the Church of God for 51 years. She also worked in banking and retail.

Eve volunteered at Butler Creek Elementary School every week. She enjoyed reading, gardening and traveling. She moved to Sandy in 2006.

She was preceded in death by her son, Craig Hubacek; three sisters; and one brother.

Survivors include her husband; daughters, Cara Corrigan of Las Vegas and Shayna Stewart of Fairview; son, Lane Hubacek of Vernon, British Columbia, Canada; four brothers; two sisters; and six grandchildren.

Timothy C. Parker

July 30, 1957-July 17, 2012

Gresham resident Timothy C. Parker, 54, died Tuesday, July 17, in Vancouver, Wash.

Services are pending.

Tim was born July 30, 1957, in Portland to Cotton and Mary Parker. Tim grew up in the Rockwood area and graduated from Reynolds High School in 1975. He attended Mt. Hood Community College and worked in the print shop for many years.

In 1985, he married Debbie Calhoun. They later divorced.

Tim worked as a dealer at the Double Down Casino in La Center, Wash., and later became a shift manager. He was an “original team member” at the casino. He enjoyed spending time with his dogs and grandson.

Survivors include his sister, Sue Dryden of Gresham; nephew, Tony Culley of Gresham; niece, Jennifer Ridout of Denver; and one step-grandson.
