Wilma Jean Johnson

Dec. 24, 1927-June 29, 2012

Gresham resident Wilma Jean Johnson died Friday, June 29. She was 84.

A private ceremony was held at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland.

Wilma was born Dec. 24, 1927, in Williams Canyon near Gaston to Howard and Una Williams. After Wilma’s father’s death, her mother remarried, and the family moved to Portland. Wilma attended Cleveland High School and worked at Lipman-Wolfe & Company’s flagship store in downtown Portland.

On July 17, 1948, she married Lavern “John” Johnson in Vancouver, Wash. Her friend, Idel, was married at the same ceremony.

Wilma became a homemaker after her first daughter was born.

Wilma loved to cook and bake. She was a proficient embroiderer, giving away dishtowels and pillowcases that showcased her handiwork. She also loved country drives, which might have turned into trips to Reno, Nev. One of her favorite excursions was getting hamburgers from the Dairy Queen in Vancouver and then going to one of the parks overlooking the Columbia River. After the kids were grown and gone, Wilma enjoyed playing bingo around Portland with her sister, Marj, and daughter, Debi.

Her husband preceded her in death in 1998.

Survivors include her children, Candy Lind of Gresham, Debi Fisher of Gresham, Cheri Johnson of Gresham, John Johnson of Vancouver and Darlene Pulicella of Gresham; sister, Marj Muldoon of Portland; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Margaret Pearl McNutt

March 31, 1920-July 23, 2012

Gresham resident Margaret Pearl McNutt died Monday, July 23. She was 92.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday, July 31, at Bateman Carroll Funeral Home, 520 W. Powell Blvd. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 1, at Bateman Carroll Funeral Home. Interment will be at Skyline Memorial Park.

Margaret was born March 31, 1920, in Austin, Colo., to John and Cora (Adams) Hawkins. She attended school in Cedaredge, Colo.

On May 28, 1938, she married LeRoy McNutt in Grand Junction, Colo. The family moved to Oregon in 1945 and to Gresham in 1948.

Margaret worked as a bus driver for the Gresham School District. She retired in 1990 with a perfect safety record. She also worked for Mark’s Bakery in Gresham for five years and the Safeway Bakery for two years. She was a member of the Rebekahs and served on the board for the Oregon Farm Bureau of Multnomah County. She attended Gresham Free Methodist Church.

Margaret enjoyed gardening, raising flowers and sewing. She also enjoyed camping and fishing and was a great cook. Family was very important to her, and she adored time spent with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Her husband and her son, Richard, preceded her in death.

Survivors include her children, Eileen Robertson of Gresham, Maxine Finnegan of Gresham and Alva McNutt of Troutdale; siblings, Charlie Hawkins of Cedaredge, John Hawkins of Hotchkiss, Colo., and Esther Barnett of Cedaredge; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Ruby Dawley

Aug. 6, 1937-July 19, 2012

Gresham resident Ruby Dawley, 74, died Thursday, July 19, at her home, surrounded by her family.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 2, at Bateman Carroll Funeral Home, 520 W. Powell Blvd.

Ruby was born Aug. 6, 1937, in Prairie Grove, Ark., to Henry and Ethel Towler. She was raised in Summerfield, Kan.

Ruby married Les Dawley, and they shared many years of marriage until his death in 2003.

Ruby resided in Oregon for more than 50 years. After retiring from Owens-Illinois, Ruby enjoyed working in her garden, fishing and spending time with her family. She was known as an old-fashioned woman, straightforward and honest but never judgmental.

Her husband, Les, and brother, Henry “Sonny” Towler, preceded her in death.

Survivors include her children, Dawn Michelle Edwards of Gresham, David Edwards of Portland and Leslie Randall of Sherwood; sisters, Joyce Gana and Doris McLaughlin of Lincoln, Neb.; and three grandchildren.

Adam Joseph Austin

Feb. 21, 1984-July 18, 2012

Gresham resident Adam Joseph Austin died Wednesday, July 18. He was 28.

Private services will be held.

Adam was born Feb. 21, 1984, in Portland to Kenneth and Julie (Brigham) Austin. He grew up in Portland, Boise and Seattle and returned to East County, where he graduated from Centennial High School in 2002.

On July 26, 2002, Adam married Tara Corder, his high school sweetheart, in Gresham. He entered the Marine Corps three days later.

Adam was stationed at Camp Pendleton and later at Twentynine Palms. He served tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan and was awarded various campaign medals, conduct medals and citations for his exemplary service. He received an honorable discharge on Dec. 14, 2011, at the rank of corporal and returned to Gresham.

Adam enjoyed fishing, gold panning, locksmithing and woodworking. He also had an interest in law enforcement and was working toward becoming a police officer. His family was important to him, as were his fellow Marines.

Survivors include his wife; daughters, Brooklynn and Abigail of Gresham; his parents, of Damascus; brothers, Christopher Austin of Portland, Ryan Austin of Portland and Buddy Austin of Lake Oswego; sister, Allyson Austin of Damascus; grandmother, Jeannie Buss of Independence; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Jan M. McNutt

Oct. 12, 1957-July 21, 2012

Damascus resident Jan M. McNutt died Saturday, July 21, in Gresham. She was 54.

Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, July 27, at Bateman Carroll Funeral Home, 520 W. Powell Blvd., followed by a graveside service at Sandy Ridge Cemetery in Sandy.

Jan was born Oct. 12, 1957, in Olympia, Wash., to Leon and Patricia (Hilliard) Loomis. She graduated from Marshfield High School in Coos Bay in 1976.

On June 27, 1976, Jan married Stanley McNutt in Shore Acres. They resided in Coos Bay until 1990, then Gresham from 1990-2001 and in Damascus since 2001.

Jan liked to bake, cook, go camping, do gardening and play Bunco. She was very active in the lives and activities (especially sports) of her children and grandchildren.

Survivors include her husband; sons, Damon McNutt of Sandy, Jordan McNutt of Damascus and Brett McNutt of Seattle; daughter, Cheyenne McNutt of Damascus; her mother, of Coos Bay; brothers, Leon Michael Loomis of Milwaukie, Lee Loomis of Deer Island and Eric Loomis of Coos Bay; sisters, Catherine Loomis of Springfield and Lori Nickerson of Coos Bay; and two grandchildren.

Kenneth E. Smith

July 9, 1925-July 20, 2012

Gresham resident Kenneth E. Smith, 87, died Friday, July 20.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, July 30, at Gresham Memorial Chapel, 257 S.E. Roberts Ave. Private interment will be at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland.

Ken was born July 9, 1925, in Wayne County, Ky., to Fletcher and Bulah (Jones) Smith. Ken served in World War II.

On Feb. 24, 1960, he married Pat Julian-Lewellen.

Ken operated Custom Aircraft Painting at the Troutdale Airport for 25 years. He also co-owned two other businesses.

Ken loved flying, fishing and taking impromptu trips.

Survivors include his wife; children, Frank Lewellen of Medford, Stephen Smith of Kelso, Wash., LeeAnn Close of Leesburg, Va., and David Smith of Wood Village; and 10 grandchildren.
