Alice Marie Ackers

Former Sandy resident Alice Marie Ackers died Thursday, July 26, in Portland. She was 89.

A committal service was held Tuesday, July 31, at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland.

Alice was born April 11, 1923, in East Chicago, Ind., to Herman and Gladys (Palmanteer) VanDaam, one of 12 children. She was raised in Indiana, California and Oregon.

On Aug. 27, 1944, Alice married Joseph Bailey Ackers. While Joseph was in the Air Force, they were stationed in Redmond, Riverside, Calif., and Portland. In 1947, they settled in Sandy, where they raised their children. They moved to east Multnomah County in 1978.

Alice worked for JC Penney in Gresham for six years. She liked to cross-stitch and make afghans and baby blankets, which she donated to various charities. She enjoyed watching golf and playing pinochle and hearts with her sisters. She did a daily crossword puzzle, saying it kept her mind straight, and read about 200 books a year. She was also an avid doll collector.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her son Stephen and her grandson Nicolas Walker in 1987.

Survivors include her daughters, Carol Brewer of Olympia, Wash., and Beth Rhinehart of Gresham; son, Randy Ackers of Gresham; brother, Johnny VanDaam of La Pine; sisters, Jeanette VanDaam of La Pine and Aileen VanDaam of Boring; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Florence Lefever

Former Sandy resident Florence Lefever died Thursday, July 12, at Portland Providence Medical Center. She was 75.

A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 11, at Sandy Seventh-day Adventist Church, 18575 S.E. Langensand Road, Sandy. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 12, at Mount Vernon Cemetery in Springfield.
