Glenda Irene Salisbury

April 5, 1935-June 7, 2012

Former East County resident Glenda Irene Salisbury, 77, died Thursday, June 7, in Nehalem.

No service will be held.

Glenda was born April 5, 1935, in Hood River to William and May (White) Petri. She was raised in Odell and in the Rockwood neighborhood and graduated from Gresham High School.

On Aug. 5, 1950, she married James Roy Salisbury in Vancouver, Wash. They resided in Corbett and Gresham for many years.

Glenda worked as a secretary and bookkeeper, and she owned a shop in Wheeler. She and her husband resided in Fairbanks, Alaska, for two years before retiring to Nehalem.

Glenda’s hobbies included crafting and fishing, and she was a Cub Scouts leader. She spent many years traveling with her husband in their motorhome, spending time in Alaska, Arizona, California and many other places.

Her son, Michael Salisbury, preceded her in death.

Survivors include her husband; sons, David Salisbury of Gresham, Philip Salisbury of Damascus and James Salisbury Jr. of Molalla; 10 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

Katherine Lou Selmar

July 5, 1956-July 20, 2012

Troutdale resident Katherine Lou Selmar, 56, died Friday, July 20.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 11, at Zion United Church of Christ, 2025 N.E. 23rd St., Gresham.

Katherine was born July 5, 1956, in Seattle to John and Lois (Schneider) Selmar. She was raised and educated in Seattle and graduated from Ingraham High School in 1974.

Katherine moved to Forest Grove and continued her education at Pacific University, receiving her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in reading and elementary education. During the 1980s, Katherine spent a year in New Zealand, where she studied at the University of Auckland. She was an elementary school teacher in Forest Grove for 20 years.

On July 2, 1996, she married Peter Stich.

Katherine enjoyed traveling and volunteering at Sweetbriar Elementary School, helping with the literacy program. She was a member of Zion United Church of Christ.

Survivors include her husband; daughter, Allison Selmar-Stich of Troutdale; her parents of Gresham; and sister, Chris Pantera of Gresham.

Wanda Jeanette “Jaye” Billings

Nov. 22, 1935-July 22, 2012

Former East County resident Wanda Jeanette “Jaye” Billings died Sunday, July 22, in Vancouver, Wash. She was 76.

A service was held at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Vancouver.

Jaye was born Nov. 22, 1935, in Canadian, Texas, to Samuel and Josephine (Mobly) Dixon. She graduated from Cleveland High School in Portland.

On June 27, 1954, she married Donald Billings.

Jaye was the owner, florist, and bridal consultant of Jaye’s Bouquets for more than 25 years. She served on the Centennial School Board for several years.

Jaye and her husband were members of the Jolly Wheelers and enjoyed traveling in their motor home. In her spare time she enjoyed tole painting, cooking, cake decorating, gardening, sewing, scrapbooking and stamping. She resided in East County until 2007.

Survivors include her husband; son, Doug Billings of Vancouver; daughters, Jacque Billings, Jenell McCann and Julie Falkenstein, all of Vancouver, and Janice Corsine of Troutdale; and nine grandchildren.

Fumi N. Kato

Feb. 1, 1922-June 28, 2012

Fairview resident Fumi N. Kato died Thursday, June 28. She was 90.

No formal service will be held.

Fumi was born Feb. 1, 1922, in Dinuba, Calif., to Kamasuke and Mikiko Nakagama. She was raised in Dinuba and attended Delano High School. She received her associate degree through the University of Minnesota.

Fumi married Joe Kato. They owned a service station. Fumi later received her certification to become a Realtor and worked as a real estate agent. She resided in Happy Valley, Gresham and Fairview for 60 years.

Her husband preceded her in death.

Survivors include her son, Wayne Kato of Fairview, and granddaughter, Linzey Kato of Portland.

Memorial donations can be made to a charity of choice.

Terence Fitch

Feb. 10, 1935-July 31, 2012

Gresham resident Terence Fitch died Tuesday, July 31, at his home. He was 77.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 5, at Bateman Carroll Funeral Home, 520 W. Powell Blvd.

Terry was born Feb. 10, 1935, in Mohall, N.D., to George and Judith Fitch. He moved to Oregon at age 15 and graduated from Woodburn High School in 1952.

In 1978, he married Rosalie Bogardus.

Terry was active in the Gresham community. He was involved with the Rockwood Rotary Club, Gresham YMCA, Gresham Downtown Development Committee, the Special Olympics Meet of Champions at Centennial High School and the Portland Homebuilders Association. He was named Realtor of the Year in 1996. Terry also served as an ombudsman for five years.

In his spare time, Terry loved to golf. He was a member of the Pleasant Valley Golf Course and later the Persimmon Valley Golf Course. He made sure to buy all of his grandsons golf clubs so they too could enjoy it. He learned to fly a plane and drive a boat, both of which he did for several years.

Survivors include his wife; children, Jeff Fitch of Troutdale, Kris Shuler of Sandy, Tara Fitch of Tucson, Ariz., and Ron Mulkey of Elsie; 10 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

John W. Evans

Sept. 23, 1956-July 29, 2012

Damascus resident John W. Evans died Sunday, July 29. He was 55.

A memorial service will be held at noon Monday, Aug. 6, at the International Longshore and Warehouse Union Local 8 Union Hall, 2435 N.W. Front Ave., Portland.

John was born Sept. 23, 1956, in Red Bank, N.J., to Frank and Mary Jane Evans. He was raised in Portland and graduated from Benson High School in 1974.

On May 20, 1984, he married Clair Beer in Clackamas.

John became a longshoreman with ILWU Local 8 on April 12, 1980. He later became a foreman and dispatcher at ILWU Local 92.

John enjoyed playing golf, boating, skiing and spending time with his daughters by coaching them in softball. He resided in Damascus for the last 25 years.

Survivors include his wife; daughters, Stephanie Evans of Vancouver, Wash., Rachel Evans of Damascus and Ashley Evans of Damascus; and sister, Heidi Adams of Vancouver.

Helen L. Robison Olson

July 2, 1912-July 31, 2012

Gresham resident Helen L. Robison Olson died Tuesday, July 31. She was 100.

No services will be held. Private interment will be at Oceanview Cemetery in Warrenton.

Helen was born July 2, 1912, in Holly, Colo., to Harry and Sylvia (Smith) Robison. Helen moved to Monmouth when she was 9 years old.

On Nov. 23, 1938, Helen married Elmer F. Olson in Seaside. He died in 1985.

Helen resided in Seaside for 30 years and worked at the hospital. She was a member of the Rebeka Lodge 54 in Hillsboro and was a hostess for the Miss Oregon Pageant.

Helen was preceded in death by her son, Richard “Rick” Olson; brother, Glen Robison; and grandson David McAuley in 1996.

Survivors include her daughter, Judith Ann McAuley of Portland; sisters, Hazel Swensen of Salem and Mabel Robison of Salem; one grandchild; and five great-grandchildren.
