Car-Boat Classic in LO is biggest show ever

Multi-faceted event on land and water draws an estimated 5,000 people to the city over weekend

Lake Oswego loves beautiful cars, boats and water skiers.

That is why the 12th annual Oswego Heritage Council Collector Car and Classic Boat Show was such a great success last Saturday and Sunday.

There were more than 250 beautifully restored cars for oohing and aahing at George Rogers Park, and on the waters of the Willamette River at Foothills Park and Oswego Lake at Lakewood Bay there were 42 classic boats on display, including the only operating PT boat in the U.S., PT 658. Plus the big event received a record number of sponsor donations.

It all made OHC executive director Jude Graham as pleased as punch. She had no reservations about calling the show 'the best ever.'

'There must have been 5,000 people there,' Graham said. 'We had our shuttle buses making three stops and they were constantly full as they circled the whole town. People are already calling and wanting to register for next year.'

It was the extra attractions that made the 2011 show so special - like the water ski show on Saturday afternoon at Lakewood Bay. Lake Oswego revisited its glorious history of water beauties past with the six Lake Oswego Water Ski Moms - Karen DeStefano, Lita Grigg, Lisa Schaller, Lisa Magliana, Sandi Swinford and Judy Westwood - all wearing matching red-polka dot swimsuits and carrying flags that spelled out 'OSWEGO.'

While the ladies supplied the glamour, Steve Schaller, on his trick skis, and Bob Barnum, with the slalom, supplied the comedy on water.

In the car part of the show, Mary Shaver was a true standout. She won the OHC Board of Directors Award for her British racing green 1954 Jaguar XK12ODHC. With the same car, Shaver previously won the top honor at the British Columbia Concours de Elegance.

For boats, winning the Major Benefactor's Award from Monte Shelton Jaguar were Mario and Anne Biseo of Lake Oswego for Bizoo, their 1949 Century Seamaid.

Other auto awards were:

n Major Benefac-tor Award - Ken Krolikoski, 1932 Packard 903 Coupe Roadster.

n Premier Sponsor Award - Monte and Elaine, Glud, 1936 Packard 120B Con-vertible.

Other boat awards were:

n Distinguished Sponsor's Award - John and Elizabeth Tyler, Choice-Black Pearl, a 1966 Century Coronado.

n Lake Oswego Corporation's Choice - Karl and Viki von Tagen, Viki G, a 1949 Chris Craft Runabout.

n President's Choice - Bill and Linda von Tagen, 1960 Lone Star Monterey.

n Directors Choice - Rick and Roberta Donovan, Moon Dance, a 2005 Homemade Lobster Boat.

n Youth Judges Choice - Mike and Nicole Mayer of Lake Oswego, Sideways, a 1929 Chris Craft Cadet.

Car show chairmen were Vic Keeler and John Baines. Kristen Winn chaired the boat show.

The next event is set for Aug. 19, 2012.
