An 8-year-old boy on a bicycle was injured but survived a collision with a car last week in the Sunset neighborhood.

The boy, who lives in the area, was riding south down Rockridge Drive, a steep hill, last Wednesday when he ran a stop sign and collided with a sedan, according to West Linn police.

His head hit the car's windshield before he fell to the ground, away from the vehicle. He was wearing a helmet, which police said likely saved his life.

When officers arrived, the boy was reportedly lying on the ground with bystanders providing care, and he was awake and alert.

Firefighters from Tualatin Valley Fire and Rescue treated the child at the scene for trauma injuries, and an ambulance took him to OHSU Hospital, where he was expected to make a full recovery, police said.

'This is another case where wearing a bicycle helmet averted a tragedy,' West Linn Police Chief Terry Timeus said, adding a note to parents: 'This is a good opportunity to speak with your children about safe bicycling and helmet use.'
