Suspected Brentwood-Darlington shooter nabbed; now cops seek the victim!

The July 20th incident closed down several blocks between S.E. Flavel Street and S.E. Crystal Springs Boulevard for several hours, as officers and police dogs attempted to track down the suspect, but were not successful. THE BEE reported that story at the time.

The arrest was finally made at 1 am on Wednesday, August 22, when Portland Police officers, assisted by other law enforcement agencies, arrested 21-year-old Joseph L. Smith on charges of Assault in the First Degree and Robbery in the First Degree.

Smith remains behind bars in the Multnomah County Detention Center at this writing, in lieu of $500,000 bail.

But now, police are looking for the shooting victim – 37-year-old Sean Joseph Cook – who was driven to Kaiser Sunnyside Hospital by a friend after being wounded.

“Detectives would like the public’s help in locating the shooting victim, who currently has a parole violation warrant for his arrest,” explained Portland Police Public Information Officer Sgt. Peter Simpson. Simpson described Cook as a Native American male, 6'2" tall, 220 pounds, brown eyes, and black hair. “He is on parole for a drug-related crime.” Crime Stoppers is offering a cash reward of up to $1,000 for information, reported to Crime Stoppers, that leads to an arrest in this case, or any unsolved felony, and you can remain anonymous.
