Severed gas line forces evacuations

A severed gas line set off evacuations along Northeast Glisan Street Thursday morning.

Portland Fire & Rescue reports that the natural gas line was accidentally severed by a utility crew just before 9 a.m. Thursday. Homes in the area were evacuated as a precautionary measure.

Northeast Glisan Street was closed, from Northeast 149th Avenue to Northeast 153rd Avenue, during the course of the containment.

"The closure will remain in effect until the line has been shut down and the scene secured," Portland Fire reports.

By 10:20 a.m. Thursday the natural gas line had been shut off, and residents were beginning the return to their homes. A Portland Fire spokesman did not have a number on the homes being evacuated.
