Man hit by car, critically injured

A man is being treated for life-threatening injuries after being struck by a vehicle on Highway 26 in Gresham.

Police were initially dispatched on Saturday, Sept. 8, to a report of a possibly intoxicated man in the road on Highway 26 east of Southeast Burnside Road and East Powell Boulevard, said Sgt. Claudio Grandjean, Gresham police spokesman.

At about the same time, officers were dispatched to an accident involving a car and a pedestrian in the same area.

Witnesses said the pedestrian had been on “all fours” in the eastbound lanes and then suddenly sprinted across the highway toward the westbound lanes where a vehicle struck him.

The driver of the vehicle — Katie Barrow, 36, of Gresham — is cooperating with investigators. Neither speed nor alcohol are considered factors in the crash. No citations are expected.

Police are not releasing the victim's name until his family is notified. He was taken to Legacy Emanuel Hospital & Health Center for treatment of critical injuries.

The East County Vehicular Crash Team is investigating and has closed the westbound lanes of Highway 26.
