Senior safari day at the Oregon Zoo

by: SUBMITTED PHOTO - Members of the LOACC visited the Oregon Zoo.Take a trip to the Oregon Zoo as it hosts its annual Senior Safari Day. Attend zoo keeper talks, pet animals at the Trillium Creek Family Farm and enjoy musical performances.

All seniors receive a free train ride on the famous zoo railway. Lunch isn’t provided, but the zoo has many food courts and lunch specials to choose from. Here’s what is coming up at the center in the coming week:

Friday, Sept. 14

Obtain a free 30-minute consultation from a volunteer attorney beginning at 9 a.m. in the Cedar Room. This consultation is by appointment only. Contact the center to schedule an appointment.

In stitches, the center’s quilting group, will meet from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., downstairs in the Birch room. The group will work cooperatively on various quilting projects. Walk-ins welcome.

The Rotary Club of Lake Oswego will serve lunch at noon. The menu consists of broccoli slaw, curried chicken served over rice, peas and carrots with freshly baked rye rolls and ginger molasses cookies for desert. Suggested donation for those 60 and over is $4, $5 for those under 60.

Monday, Sept. 17

The computer users’ group meets in the Alder room from 9:30 to 11 a.m., with state of the art equipment including both PC’s and Mac’s.

Lake Oswego Municipal Employees Association/AFSCME Local 1546 serves lunch at noon which will include Caesar salad, bay shrimp and peppers in an Alfredo sauce served over linguini noodles, baked fresh rosemary rolls and lemon bars for dessert. Suggested donation for those 60 and over is $4, $5 for those under 60.

Lunch and shop begins at 1 p.m. Join others as center driver Jim Liu takes participants to Safeway for an hour of grocery shopping. Call the center on or before Monday to sign up.

Tuesday, Sept. 18

The Happy Hikers group meets on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 9:15 a.m. to explore the trails of Tryon Creek State Park.

The Lake Oswego Respite Program begins at 11:30 a.m. in the Acorn Room. The program costs $30 per participant each day, and is held both Tuesdays and Thursdays on an ongoing basis. Contact Human Services Supervisor Berta Derman at 503-635-3758 to register for the program.

The caregivers group meets in the Cedar room from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. This group is open to family members and friends caring for older adults with memory issues. No cost and walk ins are welcome.

Wednesday, Sept. 19

United Methodist Church serves lunch at noon and today’s menu includes tossed salad, roast pork with country gravy, mashed potatoes and green beans, bread stuffing and apple crisp for dessert. Lunch is open to everyone with a suggested donation of $4 for those 60 and better or a cost of $5 for all others. Call 503-635-3758 to let us know if you are coming.

The weekly supervised computer lab runs from 12:30 to 2 p.m. downstairs in the Alder Room. Everyone is welcome.

Weekly current events with the Senior Studies Institute meets at the West End Building from 1 to 3 p.m. The cost is an annual membership to SSI for $30; you may attend two sessions before you must join. Engage with others in discussions on various topics and current events.

Experienced pinochle players meet from 1 to 3 p.m. in the Willow room. Call in advance to let the group coordinate play.

American mah jongg meets and plays between 1 and 4 p.m. in the Birch room at no cost. This group is for experienced players.

The Medicare 101 workshop meets today from 1 to 2 p.m. and in the evening from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the center. The workshop is free but reservations are required. Call 503-635-3758 for more information.

Thursday, Sept. 20

Creative hands meets in the Dogwood Room from 9:30 a.m. to noon to work on handicraft projects benefiting various charities in the community. Join us for a game of Scrabble from 1 to 3 p.m. in the Willow room. Drop-ins welcome.

It is that time of year once again to prepare for the flu season. The center is once again offering flu vaccinations through getaflushot.com on Thursday, Sept. 20, from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m., by appointment only.

All shots are administered by RNs or LPNs and vaccines used are approved and licensed by the FDA. Clinics are subject to health department regulations/availability of vaccine. Bring your Medicare and other insurance cards. Call the center to schedule an appointment at 503-635-3758.
