Governor headlines chamber summit


Oregon Gov. John Kitzhaber will give the keynote address at this year’s Gresham Area Chamber of Commerce economic summit

The summit is from 7:15 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 4, at Persimmon Country Club.

Kitzhaber will share Oregon’s plan and strategy to develop more competitive workers and businesses in keeping with the summit’s theme of “Building Economic Vitality — Our State, Our Region.”

Other speakers include Michael Greenwood of The Boeing Company and Tom Russell of Adventist Health, who will discuss their approaches to workforce development and training.

“Workforce development is one of the keys to success for economic development and regional growth,” said Alison Hart, the chamber’s chief executive officer. “The summit will showcase the investments East County businesses are making in this area.”

The summit also includes presentations by Gresham Mayor Shane Bemis on the latest growth and development in East County and the impact of the East Metro Connector Plan, and Keith Leavitt of Real Estate Property on how the Port of Portland’s investments in Troutdale and Gresham will affect the region’s future.

Graham Slater of the Oregon Employment Department will cover the eight major workforce challenges facing the state.

To round out the summit, a panel of East County business leaders will discuss partnerships they have created to support growth and investment in their companies through workforce development.

The summit costs $65 for chamber members and $95 for nonmembers. Breakfast is included. Corporate tables cost $500.
