Accident leaves motorcyclist in serious condition

A 64-year-old motorcyclist from Happy Valley is in serious condition after colliding with another vehicle Friday morning on Highway 26 west of Welches.

Michael Gaeta, riding a 2004 Harley Davidson, was traveling westbound in the left lane near milepost 38 at 8:50 a.m. Friday, Sept. 14, when a 2009 Subaru station wagon in front of him began to make a U-turn onto the eastbound lanes, said Lt. Gregg Hastings, Oregon State Police spokesman.

The man on the motorcycle tried to pass the car on the left in the non-passing section of the center-divide. He crashed into the vehicle's left front quarter panel, sending him into the eastbound lanes.

The motorcyclist, who was wearing a helmet, was airlifted via LifeFlight to Oregon Health & Science University for treatment.

The car's driver — Phyllis J. Martin, 79, of Rhododendron— was wearing a seatbelt and was not injured.

No citations have been issued.

Oregon State Police are investigating and closed the eastbound lanes until 11 a.m.
