Sarah Pope hired as new chief of staff with Oregon Department of Education

Pope will join the Oregon Department of Education Sept. 24

Acting Deputy Superintendent Rob Saxton announced the hire of Sarah Pope as his Chief of Staff. Sarah comes to Oregon Department of Education from the Oregon Business Association where she served as legislative director.

Prior to OBA, Pope spent more than seven years with the education advocacy group Stand for Children serving in a number of roles including the organization’s deputy director and then Oregon acting executive director. She will begin her new duties Sept. 24.

“Our state is undertaking significant changes to the structure of our education system,” said Saxton. “All of us — schools, districts, communities, and state government — will need to do our work differently if we are to get the outcomes we want for our kids.

“I need a strong chief of staff to help coordinate this critical work and I feel very fortunate to be able to bring someone of Sarah’s experience and talents on board. I know she will be a great addition to our team.”

Pope has a bachelor of arts in urban and environmental policy from Occidental College. As chief of staff, Pope will help coordinate key Oregon Department of Education initiatives, oversee reorganization efforts at the department and work with agency staff and partners on moving forward current education redesign work. She will be based out of the office of the deputy superintendent.

“I’m thrilled to be joining the department of education at this unique moment in Oregon’s history,” Pope said. “We have an opportunity to redesign a new seamless educational system to better support Oregon’s students, teachers, principals and superintendents. I can’t wait to join the team and get to work.”
