Tigard, Tualatin run well against tough competition

OREGON CITY — The Tigard and Tualatin high school cross country teams competed against some of the top teams from the northwest.

And they held their own while running at the Festival of Champions, held Saturday at Clackamas Community College.

In the varsity girls competition, Tigard finished in 12th place, out of 26 schools, with 199 points. The Tualatin girls placed 15th with 253 points.by: JOHN SCHRAG - TIGER ON THE GO -- Tigard's Elizabeth Dean strides out during Saturday's Festival of Champions.

Sophomore Elizabeth Dean led the way for the Tiger girls at the meet. Competing in the flight of No. 1 and No. 2 runners, Dean placed 17th in the 5,000-meter race in a time of 21 minutes and 22 seconds.

Tigard sophomore Hannaly Duff-McGaughey, running in the flight of No. 3 and No. 4 runners, placed 20th in that race with a mark of 22:47. Tigard senior Marilyn Wallenburn was 41st in that race in 24:37. In the flight of No. 5 and No. 6 runners, Tigard sophomore Kela Apau was 17th at 23:07 and senior Katherine Harbolt was 28th at 24:09.

For the Tualatin girls, senior Kayla Moore, running in the flight of No. 1 and No. 2 runners, was 26th in a time of 22:09. Tualatin junior Alyssa Fuji took 33rd place in the flight of No. 3 and No. 4 runners with a mark of 23:49. Senior Sarah Jacobson was 35th in that race in 23:56.

In the flight of No. 5 and No. 6 runners, Tualatin freshman Amanda Keen was 24th at 23:44 and senior Emily Barry was 45th at 27:09.

In boys competition, Tigard placed 13th with 183 points and Tualatin was 15th with a score of 195.

Sophomore John Caufield paced the Tiger boys at the meet. Running in the flight of No. 1 and No. 2 runners, he placed 31st in a time of 17:47. Tigard junior Devin Roche, competing in the same race, was 39th at 18:24.

Tigard senior John Walker was 14th in the flight of No. 3 and No. 4 runners with a mark of 18:08. Tigard junior Martin Ramos III was 33rd in that race at 18:44.

In the flight of No. 5 and No. 6 runners, Tigard senior Matt Carlson was 16th at 18:35 and junior Nathanael Ditton was 17th at 18:37.

For the Tualatin boys, senior Scott Allred was 23rd in the flight of No. 1 and No. 2 runners in a time of 17:35. Timberwolf junior Tyler Snyder was 36th in that race in a time of 18:03.

Tualatin sophomore Matthew Lovos was 11th in the flight of No. 3 and No. 4 runners with a mark of 17:59. Sophomore Benjamin Love was 27th in that race at 18:29.

Timberwolf sophomore Bryce Haskin was 32nd in the flight of No. 5 and No. 6 runners with his time of 19:10. Malachi Seib was 34th in that race at 19:22.

On Tuesday, the Tualatin girls got their league season off to a perfect start by scoring a 20-35 win over McMinnville and a 23-36 victory against Hillsboro in a meet held at Tualatin.

The Tualatin boys came away with a split at the meet. The Wolves bested Hillsboro 17-46, but they were edged 25-30 by McMinnville.
