Hillsboro firefighters pulled an injured school bus driver from a damaged bus Thursday morning after a collision with a truck carrying a construction crane.
The drivers name was not released. He had what firefighters called non-life threatening injuries.
The accident happened at about 8:30 a.m. near the corner of Northwest Glencoe Road and Evergreen Parkway. The tip of the crane slammed into the front left corner of the bus, crumpling the drivers side of the vehicle and tipping the bus at about a 30-degree angle.
No students were on the bus at the time of the accident. The bus was returning to the bus barn after its last stop at Liberty High School.
Because the bus was tilted, the front doors would not open, so bystanders went into the vehicle through the emergency exit to help the driver.
Hillsboro firefighters stabilized the bus with jacks and paramedics rendered aid the injured driver. It took about 20 minutes to remove the passenger door so the driver could be safely taken off the bus.
The accident blocked traffic on Evergreen Parkway for nearly 2 1/2 hours. Glencoe Road was reduced to one lane while firefighters took the driver out of the bus.
