Shipley fares well against top talent
Competing in just his second collegiate cross country race, Pacific freshman Tyler Shipley showed the potential to not only be one of the strongest runners in the Northwest Conference, but one of a rare group of elite Pacific runners all-time.
Shipley, a Forest Grove graduate, performed well against a loaded field in the mens open race at the Sundodger Invitational, held Saturday at Seattles Lincoln Park. The first Division III runner to cross the line, Shipley placed 13th with a time of 25:29.42. That time ranks Shipley eighth on Pacifics all-time list, and it is just the sixth sub-26-minute performance for a Pacific athlete in the last 30 years.
Shipleys performance led the Boxers to a 14th place finish in the meet. Pacifics women also finished in 14th.
Vikings struggle in league opener
Forest Grove did not fare well in its Pacific Conference opener last week on the road against Tualatin. The Viking defense struggled and the offense was unable to generate any
momentum in a 48-14 loss.
collected a season-high 387-yards of total offense
en route to their 48 points. It was the Tualatin defense that truly gave the Vikings fits though. Forest Groves first five possessions produced just 16 yards, one first down which came on a penalty two turnovers and three punts. The Viks finished the game with just 153 yards of total offense.
Forest Grove only crossed midfield twice, but both times the Vikings were able to score, as senior running back Steven Izquierdo punched in a pair of 1-yard touchdown runs.
Forest Grove (0-3) will try to change its fortunes at home this Friday when the Viks host McMinnville (2-1) at 7 p.m.
