Generals running back Bryant Peek Jr. gains 172 yards and scores twice

by: THE OUTLOOK: DAVID BALL - Grant running back Bryant Peek Jr. looks for room to run during the first half of Fridays 21-10 win over Barlow. GRESHAM — Grant struck quickly Friday night to knock off Barlow 21-10 in a nonleague football game at Mt. Hood Community College.

The Generals set the tone on their opening drive, going the length of the field in seven plays — all runs. Halfback Bryant Peek Jr. did most of the work and capped the drive with a 5-yard spurt through the middle.

On the point-after, Grant sent its linemen to the edge of the field, leaving a snapper along with holder Cordell Harris and kicker Julian Hanlon-Austin between the hashmarks. Harris barked out some signals, the ball came to him, and he dodged one Barlow tackler on his way to the end zone for the two-point conversion.

Grant 8, Barlow 0, and the game was barely two minutes old.

The Bruins tried to answer, driving deep into Grant territory when halfback Colby Winnett broke around the outside and turned toward the end zone. He was met by Grant defensive back Kyrell Bishop, who delivered a wallop that knocked the ball loose. Harris was the first in a crowd of Generals to arrive on the scene, covering the fumble at the 6-yard line.

Grant put together its longest drive of the night to extend the lead to 14-0 by the middle of the second quarter. The Generals converted a 3rd-and-12 when QB Sam Davis hit Nathan Halverson along the sideline for a 36-yard gain before he was shoved out of bounds.

The Generals picked up a fourth-and-1 later in the drive before Peek Jr. found the end zone again — this time from 4 yards.

Barlow’s Zach Standish hit a 33-yard field goal to put the Bruins on the scoreboard late in the first half.

Grant was stopped on a pair of fourth-and-goal situations at the end of the first half and the beginning of the second. But a Barlow fumble deep in its own territory set up Halvorson for a 1-yard plunge over the goal line for an insurmountable 21-3 lead.

Grant travels to Sprague next week.
