Caren Prentice helps people be calmer, happier and less stressed out

Prentice created the title because she is a mom who meditates and teaches other moms to meditate at her classes at the Sachi Wellness Center in West Linn. These techniques are also good for teens, men and quite possibly — the rest of humanity.

Prentice is an excellent advertisement for herself. She is cheerful, pleasant, friendly, warm and has a big welcoming smile.

“I truly think that meditation is one of the best things on the planet,” Prentice said. “Awareness is one of the best things we have. Everything we need to improve our lives is right inside of us.

“You don’t have to be a Buddhist or a Yogi (yoga practitioner) to meditate.”

It turns out, all you need is the desire. The desire to be calmer, happier, less stressed out — or to even lose weight. Before you know it, you will be whistling a happy tune.

Prentice inspires confidence in anybody considering meditation. As the proud mother of four children, she has “been there and done that.” She has also been meditating for 40 years.

“I began a love affair with meditation in 1972,” Prentice said. “Meditation really does work and calms us down. But I didn’t set out to be a meditation teacher. I started in 2007 because I wanted to deepen my own meditation.”

When Prentice opened her shop at Sachi Wellness Center, she wondered if anyone would show up. But 14 aspiring meditators attended her first class, and she has been going strong ever since. One of Prentice’s students is Carol Walch. Walch is so impressed by her own results that she is helping market the meditation classes.

“People ask me, ‘Where do I go to learn?’” Walch said. “I tell them they can come right here. I’m particularly interested in weight loss and also helping my emotions unwind.”

Prentice focuses on four main groups: meditation to relieve stress, teens, weight loss and mothers.

“The technique is gentle, very accepting and non-judgmental,” Prentice said. “I have techniques that will help people simply focus on being present in the moment, listen to the sounds around them and let their mind take off on a day dream...

“People who come to class even only once a week will notice a difference. You will shift and be different.”
