1952: Timberline celebrates power line installation, replacing generators

1952 — Months of hard labor peaked when ceremonies were held at Timberline Lodge celebrating the installation of power from the Sandy Electric Co-op. The line replaced generators formerly used at the famous resort. That step nearly completed the Co-op’s extension of lines into the Mount Hood area.

1962 — Tribute was paid to the “Good Old Days” when the Sandy Woman’s Club celebrated their 50th year with an Anniversary Tea.

Fifty or more members and friends enjoyed the dainty and bountiful refreshments served from a table beautifully decorated with yellow roses and gold candles. Members of the club wore old-time costumes and sang some favorite old songs.

1972 — Growth in the Cottrell and Damascus school districts 30 years ago was prompting the call for not only additions to the school buildings, but concern about effect of the growth on those communities. Cottrell-area residents wanted better zoning to slow the growth.

1982 — A Gresham-area pilot and his son escaped serious injury when they encountered engine trouble over Trillium Lake and struck a horse trailer during an emergency landing on Highway 26. Pilot Carl Leathers and son Carl Leathers Jr. were rushed to a Sandy doctor by a passer-by for treatment of minor cuts. Leathers reportedly tried to land the single-engine Moody Low-Wing plane in a snow-park lot at the Snow Bunny entrance. As he made his approach up the highway westbound toward the lot at 60 mph, he struck an unidentified eastbound car with a horse trailer in tow.

1992 — The Welches School District board, after a three-hour discussion of wetlands, voted to comply with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers order to excavate a portion of a ball field and return the ground to a wetland. Several people testified the school should try to fight the wetlands designation. However, the school district’s attorney, Patrick Parenteau of Perkins Coie in Portland, said it would be nearly impossible to win against the government’s team of lawyers.

2002 — Sandy was racing the weather to complete as much of an extension of Dunbarko Road as possible before Nov. 30, which was the date when the state Department of Transportation and the money for the project was cut off. What was left of the $2.6 million committed by the department in 2000 would not be turned over to the city after Nov. 30 despite an extension city officials believed was given earlier that year.
