Braves are off to a hot start with three wins in five games
The Banks boys soccer team has looked very good so far this season, beginning the campaign with a 3-1-1 record.
The Braves opened the season with a 1-1 draw against Taft, then beat North Marion 5-4 before losing to Estacada 2-1. Banks then won its next two matches, defeating Stayton 3-0 and opening Cowapa League play with a 4-1 victory over Scappoose.
Theyre playing great this year, Banks head coach Kelly Waugh said.
Boys soccer is still a relatively new sport at Banks, having been resurrected just a few years ago. But, in his first year at the helm, Waugh has changed the culture of the team. He wants them to look to score, play solid defense and most importantly, have fun on the pitch.
The main thing is that when I coach, I like to have fun, so I want to make sure that everybody is having a good time and enjoying the season, Waugh said.
Waugh says that the Banks players are very talented, but that his goal is to get them to play as a team and use their talents together inside each match.
I have a lot of really good individual players, Waugh said. And my goal this season was to get them to play as a team, get them to play together, bring out their individual skills so that when they combine those all together they can win games and play as a team.
The strength of the Braves is the players technical skill on the ball and their ability to keep possession.
They pass the ball well and they keep the ball really well, Waugh said. So, our strength is maintaining possession of the ball and then pushing it forward.
That plays well into Banks 3-4-3 formation, where they push numbers forward and try to put pressure on the opposing defense.
My philosophy is a lot of quick passing, a lot of high pressure attacking, Waugh said. I have fewer defenders, but more people up front in hopes of keeping the ball in the other teams end of the field.
Waugh is quick to point out that there is still plenty of room for Banks to improve.
We can continue to get better, Waugh said. Were building from the successes that weve had early on in the preseason games.
If Banks can improve, Waugh is predicting that the Braves can be one of the top teams in the Cowapa League.
Right now, looking at the other teams in the league and not really having a crystal ball, Waugh said, I dont see any reason why we cant be first or second in our league this year and at least make it into the state playoffs.
