Forest Grove still searching for its first win after a lopsided loss to the rival Grizzlies
The Forest Grove High football team dropped to 0-4 on the season last Friday night with a 55-6 home loss against Pacific Conference rival McMinnville.
The Vikings were shut out during the first three quarters before 5-foot-5, 145-pound junior running back Giovanni Tayetto finally put them on the scoreboard with a 4-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.
The Vikings defense gave up 14 points in the first quarter, 21 points in the second quarter, seven points in the third quarter and 13 points in the fourth quarter.
McMinnville had 528 yards of total offense. The Forest Grove secondary did a good job of shutting down the McMinnville passing attack. Forest Grove held McMinnville to just 83 yards in the air. But, McMinnville was able to accumulate a whopping 445 yards on the ground.
The Vikings struggled to get anything going through the air themselves. Quarterback Zac Collins, a 6-foot-2, 185-pound junior, completed 4 of 12 pass attempts for 38 yards with one interception.
The bright spot for the Viks was their ability to run the ball. Forest Grove was able to gain 264 yards on the ground. Running back Steven Izquierdo led the Vikings with 101 yards on 12 carries (8.4 yards per attempt), Cody Smith had 80 yards on eight attempts (10 ypc) and Tyronne Washington gained 75 yards on 10 carries (7.5 ypc).
The Vikings will try to regroup before playing Century this Friday night at Hillsboro Stadium.
