Shooting follows chase and crash
A Portland police officer fired at least one shot at a man suspected of fleeing the scene of a serious shooting on Saturday.
The name of the officer was not immediately released.
The name and condition of the suspect was not immediately released. The name of his alleged victim was not immediately released, although his condition was described as critical.
The officer is on paid administrative leave and the incident is being investigated by the Independent Police Review Division and Internal Affairs
According to police, officers responded to a shooting at the Hathaway Apartments just before 4 a.m. on Saturday morning. Paramedics rushed a male victim to an area hospital.
Minutes after arriving, officers tried to stop a pickup truck they believed contained the shooter from leaving the scene. The officers crashed into the truck with their vehicle until the driver hit a fence and stopped at Northeast 148th and San Rafael.
Portland police spokesman Lt. Robert King said that when officers approached the crash scene, there was an officer involved shooting. The suspect still refused to respond to their commands and the SERT team was called to assist.
SERT officers were later able to take the suspect into custody and he was taken to a hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
