Pet of the week

Wine puppies

Gemini and Trouble are a pair of busy dogs.

Holly and Jim Witte, the owners of A Blooming Hill Vineyard and Winery, put the two pups to work.

"They have two jobs, which they take very seriously," writes Holly Witte. "One, they do a bark around every night and every morning to let the deer know that eating grapes is out of the question. Second, on weekends, they greet people at their cars and walk them down the path around the house to the tasting room. They look back to make sure people are following! We've told them that they have to be well mannered once there and they will usually just lie down."

The dogs also appear in wedding pictures when couples get hitched at the vineyard. Gemini will even lead the bridal party into the ceremony.

"They spend most of their weekdays in the vineyard with Jim, very faithfully moving along the row of vines with him," said Holly. "Trouble did eat grapes when he was a puppy (also shoes) but he learned that wasn't such a good idea."

The two dogs have their own Facebook page and they're also featured in the latest edition of Wine Dogs, a book chronicling the very best and brightest winery canines in the country. The book is available at the tasting room of A Blooming HIll Vineyard.
