Students want the endowment fund to divest its investments in coal industry

Lewis & Clark College students launched a protest campaign Thursday trying to get the Portland private college to divest its endowment investments in coal companies.

“Lewis & Clark has such a great environmental reputation, so it just doesn’t make sense for the school to support coal companies that are so environmental irresponsible,” says Chandler Johnson, a first-year student who is coordinating the campaign.

Students collected nearly 800 signatures on a petition to deliver to college President Barry Glassner.

Sierra Club magazine recently ranked the Portland private college on its list of the “coolest schools” in the nation when it comes to environmental protection and awareness. The Sierra Club is also a leading force in trying to reduce the use of coal power in the United States and shift toward clean, renewable energy sources.
